Day 2 | Buenos Aires Architecture
Today, explore some of the top spots in Buenos Aires on a private tour focus on the beautiful architecture of the city.
Your guide will pick you up in the morning at the hotel for a full day to enjoy the mix of diverse periods and architecture styles that the city has to offer. This mixture makes Buenos Aires so unique around the world!
ART NOUVEAU: At the start of the 20th century, many cities began to see the emergence of a more modern, jovial style, with more freedom from the classical rules, the Art nouveau.
Take a look at The Casal de Catalunya from 1889, notable buildings following the style of the great Catalan architect Gaudí like the Palacio de los Lirios (Palace of the Lilies) and the “No hi ha somnis impossibles” (There are no impossible dreams) residential building.
ECLECTIC ARCHITECTURE: The richness and complexity of some buildings makes it difficult to classify them, sometimes due to the prolonged period of construction, with projects passing through the hands of several different architects who each added their personal touch.
You can see this style in the San Telmo Church, the National Congress Palace, the Palacio Barolo, the “Water Palace” and the Teatro Colon.
We include a one-hour guided tour to visit the amazing Buenos Aires Opera House, considered to be amongst the five best concert venues in the world acoustically.
BRITISH INFLUENCE: They used to say that Buenos Aires was the Paris of South America, and that may well be, but the city also takes influences from elsewhere in Europe, and a distinct British presence can be felt in certain areas like Belgrano R with its impressive homes of the employees of the British railway company, or Caballito that is known as “el barrio inglés” (the English neighborhood) – an oasis of European-style houses in the middle of one of the city’s most densely populated areas.
The British-style warehouse buildings on the docks of Puerto Madero and the famous Torre de los Ingleses (English Tower) are great exemples.
The access to the observation deck inside the tower offers incredible views of the city.
If time allows it, you can go inside!
Monday to Friday: 10.30 to 4pm
Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays: 9.30am to 6pm.
BELLE EPOQUE: One of the most important architecture influence in Buenos Aires is for sure the “French Style” that you can watch at some of this buildings: Colegio Nacional Buenos Aires (National College), Casa de la Cultura, Café Tortoni, Recoleta Cemetery, National Museum of Decorative Art, Argentine Hippodrome, Plaza Hotel, Military Circle or Palacio Paz, Naval Club, San Martin or Anchorena Palace and much more!
Most of this palaces are today government headquarters so guided tours inside not are always allowed.
ART DECO: This simple style that flourished in the 1930s can be found in several neighborhoods around the city.
The most well-known example is the Kavanagh Building, a residential apartments skyscraper that was once the tallest building in South America.
ITALIAN INFLUENCE: This style spread through the city between 1850 and 1890.
The most important example must be the famous Casa Rosada, site of the national government.
Since this was a time when the power of the state was being consolidated, other important state buildings adopted the same style are the former Casa de la Moneda, the Sarmiento Museum, the San Telmo Market, the Pasaje de La Defensa (a traditional rich family house), the Cabildo (which was restored to its original colonial style in 1940), the Museo Histórico Nacional and the Centro Cultural Recoleta.
And of course, the colorful “conventillos” of La Boca where the Italian immigrants used to live.
