Day 3 | Península Valdes Experience: Whales & Penguins
Full day tour to Península Valdes including whale watching navigation from Puerto Pirámides.
Peninsula Valdes is a World Heritage Site. Throughout its vast expanse, it has many different unique species that find ideal conditions to develop their life in this area.
Departure from Puerto Madryn at 7:30-8:00am.
The first stop is in the center of Interpretation Istmo Carlos Ameghino, where you will learn about the fauna, flora and geology of the Peninsula.
We will also go to the viewpoint where you can observe the Golfo Nuevo, San José and the Island of Birds.
The next stop will be in the little town Puerto Pirámides where, depending on the period of the year, you will be able to do whale watching.
It is a unique experience: observing the whale in its natural habitat from the boats, counting on whaling guides, biologists, excellent equipment of filmmaking and natural photography. The whales arrive at the coasts of the “Golfo Nuevo” and “San Jose” because of the tranquility of their waters. In these golfs some of the important stages of their lives take place: to couple, to give birth and to raise its calves.
Our route begins by bordering the coast, guided by our specialized and bilingual personnel; they will talk about the exclusive ecosystems of the coast and the sea.
We will continue sailing, until we meet the whales.
While we are watching them, the boat switches off the motors to let the silence rule, only interrupted by the sounds of the sea and the occasional birds.
In this scene the whales appear next to the boat and we manage to coexist in harmony in the same habitat and at the time that they decide.
Continuing with the land excursion, depending on the period of the year, the weather or the tides, you can also see elephant seals, penguins and sea lions. There is the possibility to also see orcas during the months of March and April.
We will continue to Estancia San Lorenzo Nature Reserve, located within the Peninsula Valdés Protected Natural Area, 160 kilometers from the city.
On its coasts a colony of more than 600,000 Magellan penguins is located and can be visited between September 7th and March 31st each year. This makes San Lorenzo the world’s biggest Magellanic penguin colony.
In addition to observe these magnificent animals in their natural habitat, in this area we can find marine fossils that crop out in the cliffs and gullies that run down to the sea.
Thanks to its diversity of attractions, you will be able to choose between several trails depending on the area you want to visit or its difficulty.
The colony of Magellanic penguins on San Lorenzo has been growing steadily ever since penguins started to nest here nearly 50 years ago. This average growth exceeds more than 20% per year, since 1995. Magellanic penguins arrive every year early September and leave by the end of April.

Once inside the area, the sea lions will surprise them with their heads close to the boat, expectant, seeking to discover who will be the first person to enter the water to play with them.
This experience is an utterly unmissable from our visitors.
It is only possible in three places in the world, however the proximity of the sea lions to the coast makes it particularly memorable in Puerto Madryn.
