Day 3 | Península de Valdés - Puerto Madryn Peninsula Valdes Experience: Whales & Penguins

Full day Península Valdés with Estancia San Lorenzo

Peninsula Valdes is a World Heritage Site. Throughout its vast expanse, it has many different unique species that find ideal conditions to develop their life in this area.

Departure from Puerto Madryn at 7:30-8:00am. The first stop is in the center of Interpretation Istmo Carlos Ameghino, where you will learn about the fauna, flora and geology of the Peninsula. We will also go to the viewpoint where you can observe the Golfo Nuevo, San José and the Island of Birds. The next stop will be in the little town Puerto Pirámides where, depending on the period of the year, you will be able to do whale watching. It is a unique experience: observing the whale in its natural habitat from the boats, counting on whaling guides, biologists, excellent equipment of filmmaking and natural photography. The whales arrive at the coasts of the “Golfo Nuevo” and “San Jose” because of the tranquility of their waters.

We will continue to Estancia San Lorenzo Nature Reserve, located within the Peninsula Valdés Protected Natural Area, 160 kilometers from the city.

On its coasts a colony of more than 600,000 Magellan penguins is located and can be visited between September 7th and March 31st each year. This makes San Lorenzo the world’s biggest Magellanic penguin colony.

In addition to observe these magnificent animals in their natural habitat, in this area we can find marine fossils that crop out in the cliffs and gullies that run down to the sea.

The colony of Magellanic penguins on San Lorenzo has been growing steadily ever since penguins started to nest here nearly 50 years ago. This average growth exceeds more than 20% per year, since 1995. Magellanic penguins arrive every year early September and leave by the end of April.

Estancia Cristina Discovery

A driver will meet you at the hotel for a transfer to the embarking port to go explore Estancia Cristina, one of the oldest Patagonian Ranch in the area.

Having set sail from Punta Bandera harbor at 9 AM, you will glide over the waters of Lake Argentino’s Northern Arm to reach the furthest possible point of navigation in the Upsala Channel,

where you can enjoy an incredible panoramic view of the Upsala Glacier’s immense front.

Disembarked at the shores close to Estancia Cristina, you will be welcomed by our specialized driver guides who will help them into their 4×4 vehicles, ready to head off into the wilderness.

The sturdy 4WDs will then venture up into the Feruglio Mountains, a 9.5km ride that offers great views of our surroundings and takes us ultimately to an elevated area.

Once there, you’ll begin a 20-minute trek over terrain characterized by glacial erosion, until reaching the Upsala Glacier Lookout; an exclusive vantage point for visitors to appreciate this immense glacier that can only be accessed from Estancia Cristina.

There will be plenty of time here to enjoy views of Lake Guillermo and the eastern side of the Upsala Glacier, as well as the Southern Patagonian Ice Field.

Afterward, the groups will head back to the lodge in our 4×4 vehicles, for a well-deserved rest and break for lunch (approx. 1 hour).

Later on, having returned from the trek, you will visit the Costumbrista Museum, housed in the estancia’s old shearing shed where guests can learn all about the history of the Masters family: their lives, adventures, and how they became pioneers in Patagonia.

Finally, a guided tour will take visitors around Estancia Cristina’s estate – up to the Caterina River, the waterwheel, the chapel, and the rest of the lodge.

Argentina | Falls in Love

This amazing 8-Day riding tour will take you to the hilly landscape of Colinas de Garzon, the amazing coast of the Atlantic Ocean and charming countryside trails on company of some of the best horses you will ever meet! Uruguay is a small friendly country of experiences, a country to enjoy the simple things of life (which sometimes turn out to be the greatest!)… You can relax and enjoy things like good fresh food cultivated by locals, a cooking class with a worldwide famous local chef who will received you at his home, fine good wines made by passionate owners, virgin beaches visited by everyone (which really means “not many”), and music from the heart like Tango and Candombe. In the native traditions that existed in our lands before the arrival of the Spaniards, the horse was a symbol of power, endurance and freedom. In those cultures, the horse signified loyalty, love and the unwavering faith of the warrior spirit that understands the power achieved through true cooperation. We invite you to get to know our horses and learn how to bond with them through communication. Horses are an integral part of nature, and its passage doesn’t disturb the environment around us, enabling us to enter natural reserves, forests and beaches without disturbing the animals living in these areas.
